WE REMEMBER

Veterans know the price paid for our freedom and they want all Canadians to share in this understanding. They are passing the torch of remembrance to us, the people of Canada, to ensure that the memory of their efforts and sacrifices will not die with them, and that an appreciation of the values they fought for will live on in all Canadians.  Every year in November, we stop to remember, salute and honour Canada's Veterans and active duty personnel. Canadians from coast to coast will gather to pay tribute to our heroes for their service and sacrifice Friday, November 11.  I encourage you, wherever you are to take the time to participate in your local Remembrance Day Service.  I look forward to attending the service in Saskatoon.  Please click here for details.

Remembrance Day is a time to remember the women and men who have fought for our country, its ideals and our freedoms. We remember their noble and selfless service in conflicts, peacekeeping and reconstruction missions around the world. We respect and support the contributions of those who wear the uniform today, those who are willing to risk it all to defend what they believe is a just cause and a responsibility of Canada.

Did you know:

  • Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth. It was originally called “Armistice Day” to commemorate armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.—on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
  • The poppy is the symbol of Remembrance Day. Replica poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion to provide assistance to Veterans.
  • Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. We remember the more than 1,500,000 Canadians who have served throughout our nation’s history and the more than 118,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice.
