One of the first signs of spring is the beautiful prairie crocus. (we all anxiously await seeing these crocus')
Growing in locations with plenty of sun (like open prairie, roadsides and hillsides), prairie crocuses often bloom before the snow is gone, adding some colour to the landscape. It’s saucer shaped blooms create a nice cozy place for insects to warm up helping them survive the early spring.
By blooming so early, the crocus guarantees itself the attention of available pollinators, like small bees and other insects. The crocus attracts them with the abundance of pollen in their bright yellow centres.
I was pleased to join Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty as he presented 11 dedicated individuals with the 2022 Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal during a ceremony at Government House. One medal will be presented at a later date.
Saskatoon Willowgrove constituent Brad Sylvester was one of the deserving recipients.
"Volunteers are superb role models who improve our communities and our province through their dedication and compassion," Mirasty said. "I am honoured to have been able to meet them and to recognize their exceptional contributions during National Volunteer Week."

A spring snow storm is forecast to hit southern Saskatchewan this week. An excellent safety reminder from SaskPower. Let's all stay safe.
Also, make sure you are prepared by checking your home emergency supplies including candles, matches, flashlight (with extra batteries), non-perishable food/water supplies, and prescription medication supplies. Keep your phone charged in case of power failure and check road conditions before travelling (if the roads are difficult for you, they will be difficult for emergency vehicles too).
Over the next couple days, a mix of rain and heavy snowfall are forecasted for a large portion of the province. Weather like this can damage power lines and poles. If you come across a downed power line, please stay at least 10 meters back and call us at 310-2220. #SkOutage
